Netherlands Recalls Ambassador From Iran Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Crisis - Foreign Minister

The Netherlands has recalled its ambassador from Iran after the latter had expelled two Dutch diplomats amid the ongoing diplomatic crisis between the two countries, Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th March, 2019) The Netherlands has recalled its ambassador from Iran after the latter had expelled two Dutch diplomats amid the ongoing diplomatic crisis between the two countries, Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said on Monday.

On February 20, Iran called personae non-grata two Dutch diplomats in response to expulsion of two Iranian embassy staff members from the Netherlands last year.

"The two Dutch diplomats were removed to the Netherlands on Sunday, March 3 ... The cabinet has therefore recalled the Dutch ambassador to Tehran for consultation," Blok said in a written statement to the Dutch parliament, as quoted by the Dutch news media outlet.

Late on Sunday, Blok said that expulsion of the Dutch diplomats from Iran was unacceptable and "negative for the development of bilateral relations."

The diplomatic crisis between the Netherlands and Iran erupted last year when the Dutch intelligence service accused Tehran of being behind assassinations of two Iranian opposition figures in the Netherlands: Mohammad Samadi in 2015 in the city of Almere and Ahmad Nissi in 2017 in The Hague.
