Russia to Equip Mass-Production MC-21 Passenger Jet with Domestic PD-14 Engines - Borisov

Russia will install domestically-developed PD-14 engines on its prospective MC-21 medium-range passenger aircraft, although it plans to continue cooperating with US aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) Russia will install domestically-developed PD-14 engines on its prospective MC-21 medium-range passenger aircraft, although it plans to continue cooperating with US aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said Tuesday.

The PD-14 turbofan engine is a domestic rival to the Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engine on the MC-21.

"The PD-14 will be installed on the 12th aircraft, which is the first in mass-production. We will not discontinue partnership with Pratt & Whitney, and we will not take any measures to worsen this partnership. It's up to them to decide on the issue. We are ready to switch only to domestic engines under certain circumstances," Borisov, who overseas Russia's defense sector in the government, told reporters.

He stressed that the possible difficulties with the supply of Pratt & Whitney engines should not hamper the development of the MC-21 project.

According to Borisov, the certification of the plane should be completed by the end of 2020, while mass-production should start in 2021.

PD-14 is a basic turbofan engine, which is created in the broad cooperation of enterprises of the United Engine Corporation for the MS-21 airliner. Currently, the aircraft is being tested with Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engines.

"On the 12th aircraft, on the first serial, the engine of the PD-14 will go. We will not refuse partnership with Pratt & Whitney, we will not take any measures to worsen this partnership, it's up to them to decide the issue. We are ready for that under certain circumstances, we will be ready to switch only to domestic engines, "said Borisov.

At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the possible difficulties with the supply of Pratt & Whitney engines should not interfere with the development of this project.
