Venezuela Border Clashes Shut Schools In Tachira State

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th February, 2019) Schools will be closed in two municipalities in Venezuela's Tachira state on the border with Colombia after the weekend of clashes over aid delivery, Gov. Laidy Gomez said Monday.

"I decided to suspend lessons at public schools in the border municipalities of Bolivar and Pedro Maria Urena (cities Urena and San Antonio) due to violence unleashed by armed civilians against the population and to protect students and teachers," she said in a televised press conference.

Last Saturday's attempt by the opposition to bring US relief aid into the country from Colombia and Brazil descended into chaos after opposition supporters clashed with Venezuelan troops. Penal Forum, a nonprofit, said four people died and 58 were injured, 15 of them in Tachira.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro denied the country needed humanitarian aid and slammed the failed delivery as a prelude for invasion. He accused opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president last month, of being a US puppet.
