Bolivian President Evo Morales Urges Lima Group Leaders to Find Solution for Venezuela Via Dialogue

Bolivian President Evo Morales called on the representatives of the Lima Group, who are participating in a meeting in Bogota on Monday, to find a solution to the conflict in Venezuela by means of dialogue

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) Bolivian President Evo Morales called on the representatives of the Lima Group, who are participating in a meeting in Bogota on Monday, to find a solution to the conflict in Venezuela by means of dialogue.

"Presidents of the Lima Group, with respect to our political differences and given that you are democratically elected leaders, I ask you to find a solution through dialogue, saving lives and preventing war that will bring destruction to our Latin America," Morales said on Twitter.

Lima Group leaders are holding consultations in Colombia on Monday to discuss the situation in Venezuela. Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who has proclaimed himself the country's interim president, will take part in it. The bloc last met on February 4 in Ottawa. During the summit, the group recognized the so-called Venezuela's interim government led by Guaido and accepted him as a full member of the bloc. In addition, Lima Group members imposed a number of restrictions on the country's legitimate government led by President Nicolas Maduro.

This past month has seen Venezuela going through a political crisis. It started on January 5, when Guaido was elected as president of the Venezuelan unicameral legislature, the opposition-run National Assembly, whose authority has not been recognized by any other branch of power since 2016. On January 23, shortly after the Venezuelan Supreme Court annulled Guaido's election as the National Assembly's head, the opposition leader proclaimed himself acting Venezuelan president.

President Maduro, whose new presidential term, disputed by the opposition that boycotted the election, began on January 10, viewed Guaido's provocative actions as an attempted coup and blamed the United States for preparing it.

Guaido's self-proclamation was soon recognized by the United States, followed by about 50 of its allies. Bolivia China, Cuba, Russia and many other countries still support Maduro's legitimate government. Mexico and Uruguay are among the nations that have refused to recognize Guaido and declared themselves neutral, promoting dialogue as a means of resolving the crisis in the country.
