WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd February, 2019) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s top priority sites include some of the most polluted locations in the United States and may pose health threats to Native American peoples who live close to them, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report.

"EPA's National Priorities List sites are some of the most contaminated places in the country," the report said on Friday. "They may pose unique challenges for Indian tribes."

Toxic substances in two New York rivers, the report pointed out as an example, pose a threat to one tribe's health and its subsistence lifestyle, which includes fishing.

The EPA, according to the report, does not have reliable data identifying National Priorities List sites that are located on tribal property and only reach out to Native Americans after site actions negatively affect tribal interests.
