NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd February, 2019) The Manhattan district attorney's office has prepared state criminal charges against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in case he receives a presidential pardon for Federal crimes, media reported on Friday.New York prosecutors are confident that they will prevail despite the fact Manafort's lawyers will likely challenge the charges based on the "double jeopardy" statue which forbids being tried twice for the same crime, the New York Times reported citing several people with knowledge of the matter.
In a November interview with the New York Post, Trump said he was still considering pardoning Manafort.
Manafort is scheduled to be sentenced next month for convictions in two federal cases brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Manafort faces up to 25 years in prison for tax and bank fraud and additional time for conspiracy counts including those related to work he did for the Ukraine government.
