NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd February, 2019) Organizers of a march in support of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro, which is scheduled to be held on February 23, demand the United States stop intervening in the South American country's internal affairs, an International Action Center (IAC) employee told Sputnik.
"We are taking global solidarity actions with Venezuela and against US military intervention in the country," the employee said.
The protest, organized by the IAC, will take place in New York on Saturday and the demonstrators plan to start the march on Wall Street.
The exact number of participants is not confirmed, however, thousands of individuals from across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Iran, and Mexico among other countries, have supported the call to take action on Saturday, according to the IAC website.
The organizers will use the "No war on Venezuela! No war for oil!" message during the protest and will speak against the US humanitarian aid to Venezuela that, according to the IAC, is "a tool to provoke confrontation to justify greater US intervention."
On Thursday, local media reported that US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido alongside the members of the opposition-led parliament departed from Caracas to the country's border with Colombia to welcome the delivery of US aid despite Maduro's pledge to turn back the relief.
Guaido has earlier said that US humanitarian aid would be delivered to the country on February 23. The Venezuelan government headed by Maduro so far has refused to accept aid that the United States delivered to neighboring Colombia, blasting it as a ploy to topple his government.
The State Department in a press release on Thursday said that US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams is traveling to the Colombian border city of Cucuta to support humanitarian aid delivery to Venezuela.
The head of the International Center of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Columbia last week said it would not help distribute the goods because it does not consider the US assistance to be true humanitarian aid. ICRC officials and the UN Secretary-General's office have urged Washington not to politicize humanitarian assistance and not to deliver aid without the consent of Venezuelan government authorities.
The situation in crisis-torn Venezuela escalated on January 23 when Guaido declared himself interim president and was immediately recognized by Washington, which prompted Maduro to accuse the Trump administration of trying to orchestrate a coup. Russia, China, Mexico, among other nations, have reaffirmed their support for Maduro as the country's only legitimate head of state. In addition, the United Nations also still recognizes Maduro as Venezuela's president.
