Zambian Foreign Minister Says Rosatom to Build Nuclear Reactor in North of Country

Russia's Rosatom will build a nuclear research reactor in the north of Zambia in addition to joint work on a research center near the Zambian capital, preparations for the project are underway, Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji told Sputnik on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th February, 2019) Russia's Rosatom will build a nuclear research reactor in the north of Zambia in addition to joint work on a research center near the Zambian capital, preparations for the project are underway, Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji told Sputnik on Wednesday.

Russia and Zambia are already working on a project for a nuclear research center next to the Zambian capital of Lusaka.

"Of course ... It is in the northern part of the country, just close to one of the biggest rivers in Zambia," the minister said, when asked if any additional nuclear reactors were planned as part of Russian-Zambian nuclear cooperation.

Malanji said the spot for the reactor had already been found.

"The engagement by our technocrats, the soil samples have been done, the preliminary process is already on the ground. So, it is from that premise that I can assure you that we have moved miles [ahead] regarding that program and it wouldn't be long that we start implementing," the minister said.

Malanji added that the government wanted to be "as transparent as we can afford to be" and stressed the peaceful nature of the project.
