Trump Mocks California Rail Project After US States File Lawsuit Against Emergency

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday took a shot at California's troubled high-speed rail project after a coalition of 16 states led by California filed a lawsuit against his decision to declare a national emergency over border security

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th February, 2019) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday took a shot at California's troubled high-speed rail project after a coalition of 16 states led by California filed a lawsuit against his decision to declare a national emergency over border security.

"As I predicted, 16 states, led mostly by Open Border Democrats and the Radical Left, have filed a lawsuit in, of course, the 9th Circuit! California, the state that has wasted billions of Dollars on their out of control Fast Train, with no hope of completion, seems in charge!," Trump said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The president also claimed that the rail project's cost overruns have set world records, making it hundreds of times more expensive than a wall along the border between Mexico and the United States.

The $77 billion high-speed rail project between San Francisco and Los Angeles was canceled last week admit delays and cost overruns. In comparison, a border wall would cost an estimated $20-$25 billion.

On Friday, Trump signed a national emergency declaration to secure funding to build the wall. Trump acknowledged at the time that he was likely to be sued for declaring the national emergency, adding that he would be successful in the US Supreme Court.

The attorneys general of California and 15 other states on Monday filed a lawsuit in the Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco, challenging Trump's national emergency. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent the president from shifting billions of dollars from military construction to the border without explicit congressional approval.
