First Syrian Family Reaches Syria's Jleb Checkpoint for Refugees From Rukban

The first Syrian family has reached the Jleb checkpoint, one of the two humanitarian corridors opened for refugees willing to leave the Rukban camp located on the US-controlled territory of Syria

JLEB CHECKPOINT (Syria) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 19th February, 2019) The first Syrian family has reached the Jleb checkpoint, one of the two humanitarian corridors opened for refugees willing to leave the Rukban camp located on the US-controlled territory of Syria.

"We are not from the Rukban itself, but from a small village near it. But it is impossible to live there, too. We learned about the opening of the corridor, loaded all household utensils that we could carry on trucks, and hit the road at night ... We traveled via the desert trails and mountain roads around the roadblocks of militants, trying not to be seen by anybody," Mahmoud, a 55-year-old head of family, said.

There are 10 children, seven women, two men, and four elderly people in his small caravan.

The corridors were opened by Damascus with the help of Moscow. They are located on the border of the 55-kilometer (over 34 miles) zone controlled by the United States. Syrian refugees can voluntarily and safely exit the area through the checkpoints in the settlements of Jleb and Jabal al-Ghurab.

The checkpoints are set to operate round the clock. Security is ensured by the Syrian law enforcement agencies in cooperation with military police of the Russian Armed Forces. In addition, the corridors have facilities for reception, medical examination, recreation and paperwork, as well as for providing food, clothing, material support and sending refugees to places of their residence.
