Lavrov Stresses Need to Promote Dialogue in Venezuela Instead of Giving Ultimatums

The international community should be encouraging dialogue between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition instead of issuing election ultimatums, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday

MUNICH (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) The international community should be encouraging dialogue between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition instead of issuing election ultimatums, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

"According to international law ... the Venezuelan crisis is their internal affair, and the international community should encourage the Venezuelans to find a solution between themselves, and this [idea] has been supported by Uruguay, Mexico, countries of the Caribbean Community, Russia, China, Iran, Bolivia and many others ... But it has turned out that this does not correspond to the plan set up with regard to the fate of the Venezuelan state. Instead, certain rules were put forward ... forcing the legally elected president to call early elections," Lavrov told reporters in Munich.

"And at the same time, under the same rules, Mr. [parliament speaker] Guaido has been proclaimed [Venezuela's] interim president. The arbitrary nature of what is happening, in my opinion, is obvious even to my Western colleagues," the minister stressed.
