Sergey Lavrov Slams Drawing New 'Illegitimate' Players Into Possible North Syria's Buffer Zone

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov slammed on Saturday drawing any new players into a possible northern Syrian buffer zone as counterproductive

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov slammed on Saturday drawing any new players into a possible northern Syrian buffer zone as counterproductive.

On January 15, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, following a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, that the latter had proposed creating a 30-kilometer buffer zone in Syria.

"US President Donald Trump will create a buffer zone in the north of Syria, and it is difficult for me to comment on this ... I think it is necessary to focus on the agreements that are being developed within the framework of the Astana format ... Various plans of countries that are illegitimately on Syrian territory, especially plans to involve even more illegitimate players there, as I see it, do not really help," Lavrov said at the Munich Security Conference, when asked about the possible buffer zone with participation of the United States and European countries.

He also said that the staged nature of the footage of an alleged chemical attack in Syria's Duma had always been obvious.

"I think the West understood all this from the very beginning, because some Western countries staged these provocations, including through the infamous White Helmets, which is a humanitarian organization headed by a former MI-6 employee," Lavrov stressed.
