Egypt's Sisi Calls for Consolidated Support for Libyan Settlement, National Institutions

The Libyan crisis settlement remains one of the most urgent issues on the African continent, with consolidated support for the political process and national institutions needed to bring the peace to the conflict-torn country, Abdel Fattah Sisi, the Egyptian president and the current AU chairman, said on Saturday

MUNICH (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th February, 2019) The Libyan crisis settlement remains one of the most urgent issues on the African continent, with consolidated support for the political process and national institutions needed to bring the peace to the conflict-torn country, Abdel Fattah Sisi, the Egyptian president and the current AU chairman, said on Saturday.

"One of the most urgent issues on the African arena is the security in Libya. We are required to provide the necessary support to the political track and the efforts of UN [Special] Envoy [Ghassan Salame]. We need to work on supporting and enabling the Libyan national institutions including the military," Sisi said at the Munich Security Conference.

He also reiterated Cairo's commitment to help Libya in recovering from the crisis and unifying its armed forces, adding that the cause "will reflect positively on the Libyan people and the two regions of North African and the African Sahara."

Libya has been torn apart by conflict since the long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. The eastern part of the country is governed by the parliament, backed by the Libyan National Army (LNA) and located in Tobruk. The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), headed by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, operates in the country's west and is headquartered in Tripoli.
