RABAT,(APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 03rd Nov, 2016 ) - Moroccan police have arrested 23 people after clashes broke out between rival football fans following a game in Tangiers, the interior ministry said Thursday.
Eight policemen were hurt and seven police vehicles and 12 private cars were damaged during Wednesday's violence, a ministry statement said. Those arrested, who included nine minors, were in custody pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, it said.
The clashes erupted after a semi-final in the national Throne Cup, pitting local side Ittihad Tanger against Moghreb Fes at Stade de Tanger.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the local team was eliminated.
At the final whistle, fights broke out between supporters of the two teams, a local journalist who witnessed the violence told AFP. Supporters of the home side tried to attack those of their rivals in the stands, but the police blocked them.
The violence continued outside the stadium, where several vehicles were stoned or overturned, according to images published on social media. The local press has reported dozens injured and significant damage to property including vandalism of shops.
