Russia to Choose Measures for UK Media Once London Decides on Russian Media - Watchdog

Russia will decide on any reciprocal measures to be taken against UK media working in the country once London makes its own decisions about placing restrictions on Russian media, head of Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, Alexander Zharov, said on Friday

SOCHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th February, 2019) Russia will decide on any reciprocal measures to be taken against UK media working in the country once London makes its own decisions about placing restrictions on Russian media, head of Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, Alexander Zharov, said on Friday.

On December 21, Roskomnadzor said it had started checks to verify whether BBC World News and BBC internet resources complied with Russian law after the UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) accused the RT broadcaster of breaching the regulator's rules and failing to provide impartial news coverage in seven programs aired in March and April. Late last month, Roskomnadzor announced that it had detected a number of violations in broadcasting procedures with regard to BBC World News in Russia, but the company refuted the accusations, saying it was always ready to provide additional information about how it covers certain events.

"You have just answered your own question reciprocal. When ... measures are applied to the Russian media, we will decide which measures to apply to UK media," Zharov told reporters on the sidelines of the Russian Investment Forum, asked about what reciprocal measures the watchdog would apply to UK media working in Russia.

The Russian Investment Forum is taking place on February 14-15 in the resort city of Sochi. Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency is an official media partner of the event.
