Damage From Cyberattacks in Russia Expected to Grow 50-80% in 2019 - Sberbank

Sberbank expects that the number of cyberattacks and damage from them will grow by about 50-80 percent year-on-year in 2019, the bank's deputy chairman Stanislav Kuznetsov said on Friday

SOCHI (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th February, 2019) Sberbank expects that the number of cyberattacks and damage from them will grow by about 50-80 percent year-on-year in 2019, the bank's deputy chairman Stanislav Kuznetsov said on Friday.

"I believe that the upward trend for losses persists both in Russia and worldwide. But no fundamental measures indicating rapid trend reversal have been undertaken yet. Growth from about 50 to 80 percent will remain both in damage and number of attacks," Kuznetsov told reporters on the sidelines of the Russian Investment Forum.

The number of hacker attacks in Russia grew 60 percent year-on-year in 2018, according to Kuznetsov's presentation, which was shown at a forum session.

Last summer, Kuznetsov said that the damage to the Russian economy from cyberattacks could amount to 1.3 trillion rubles in 2018. At the same time, he noted that Sberbank itself had been managing to avoid any losses from hacker activity for several years in a row. Sberbank CEO Herman Gref said last summer that the bank saw a 50-percent increase in the number cyberthreats compared with the corresponding period of 2017.

The Russian Investment Forum is taking place on February 14-15 in the resort city of Sochi. Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency is an official media partner of the event.
