The topic of Japan potentially suspending visa regime for Russian citizens was not discussed at recent talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th February, 2019) The topic of Japan potentially suspending visa regime for Russian citizens was not discussed at recent talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

The Sankei Shimbun newspaper reported earlier in the day, citing sources in the Japanese government, that Tokyo was mulling over the possibility of introducing a visa-free regime for Russians, partially, in an attempt to create a more favorable atmosphere for ongoing peace treaty talks with Moscow.

"No, [the visa issue] was not part of the recent negotiations. But the topic of suspending visas often appears on the agenda of talks with various states, and, in fact, this is what we ultimately strive for. Therefore, such discussions are certainly welcome and are in line with further development of relations," Peskov said.
