Russia's Bogdanov, Palestinian Lawmaker Discuss Intra-Palestinian Divide - Moscow

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary general of the Palestinian National Initiative political party, the issue of restoring unity between the main Palestinian factions using the United Nations as a political platform, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed with Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary general of the Palestinian National Initiative political party, the issue of restoring unity between the main Palestinian factions using the United Nations as a political platform, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"During the talks, a discussion of the issue of restoring Palestinian national unity on the political platform of UN and prospects for the Palestinian-Israeli settlement on the internationally-recognized legal base took place," the statement read.

The statement comes after a meeting of the main Palestinian factions that concluded in Moscow earlier in the day. The search for the ways to resolve the long-standing intra-Palestinian divide was said to be the key topic at the talks. Yet, a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), Moatassim Hamada, told Sputnik earlier on Wednesday that participants of the meeting had decided to annul the final statement due to the lack of consensus on a number of its points.

Hamas movement gained control of the Gaza Strip after a short war with the rival Fatah movement in 2007, which led to the enclave's blockade.

In 2017, the two factions agreed to govern the Gaza enclave and the West Bank together but missed the December 2017 deadline to form a functioning cabinet over differences.
