US lawmakers have reached an agreement on border security funding that will avert another federal government shutdown, Senator Richard Shelby said on Tuesday
WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th February, 2019) US lawmakers have reached an agreement on border security funding that will avert another Federal government shutdown, Senator Richard Shelby said on Tuesday.
He declined to reveal any more detail.
Republican and Democratic congressmen failed to reach a deal during their talks on Sunday. Failure to arrive at a compromise by Friday could result in a new federal government shutdown, following a record-long 35-day shutdown, which started in December. The federal government was temporary re-opened exactly in order to negotiate a deal on border security.
The shutdown was triggered by a dispute between US President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats over funding for building a wall on the US border with Mexico. Trump has asked the Congress to authorize $5.7 billion to build the border wall, but Democrats have refused to meet the demand.
