Head of Yemen's Houthi Movement Praises Morocco for Cutting Ties With Saudi-Led Coalition

Abdul Aziz bin Habtoor, the head of the Yemeni rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah, praised Morocco's recent move to suspend its participation in Saudi-led coalition's airstrikes against the Houthis, local media reported

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th February, 2019) Abdul Aziz bin Habtoor, the head of the Yemeni rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah, praised Morocco's recent move to suspend its participation in Saudi-led coalition's airstrikes against the Houthis, local media reported.

Last week, media reports emerged that Rabat had decided to suspend its participation in the airstrikes, which the coalition had been carrying out at Yemeni government's request since 2015, and also to recall its ambassador from Saudi Arabia. The move was reportedly triggered by the fact that a documentary about the disputed Western Sahara territory, wishing to secede from Morocco, was broadcast on Saudi state tv. However, Moroccan authorities have not officially confirmed the information.

According to Yemeni news agency Saba, Habtoor sent a telegram to Moroccan Prime Minister Saadeddine Othmani, in which he praised Rabat's decision, suggesting that it could boost ties between Yemen and Morocco.

Habtoor also expressed hope that the Moroccan government would support efforts to put end to Yemeni crisis.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces, led by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, and the Houthi rebels for several years.

In December, the Yemeni warring parties met for the UN-sponsored talks in Stockholm. The sides reached a deal on the ceasefire in the port of Al Hudaydah and agreed to implement various humanitarian measures, including the exchange of prisoners of war and setting up humanitarian corridors.
