Russian Scientists to Create Ultra-Precise Optical Atomic Clocks - Research Institute

Russian scientists are working to create new-generation optical atomic clocks to unlock the full potential of the country's digital economy, the press service of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Physical-Engineering and Radiotechnical Metrology (VNIIFTRI) told Sputnik on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th February, 2019) Russian scientists are working to create new-generation optical atomic clocks to unlock the full potential of the country's digital economy, the press service of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Physical-Engineering and Radiotechnical Metrology (VNIIFTRI) told Sputnik on Friday.

"The institute's new device will basically be the second generation of optical clocks. Our key task is to create the devices and elements keeping time with the highest accuracy, and which would be used in the infrastructure of the digital economy of our country," Sergey Donchenko, the VNIIFTRI general director, said as quoted by the press service.

He stressed that the scientists of the VNIIFTRI institute were also developing a separate, compact model of the optical atomic clocks that can be transported.

According to Donchenko, the projects developed by the institute "help Russia to secure a place on the list of the leading technology countries of the world."

Optical atomic clocks work based on cold strontium atoms. Its drift totals one second in several billion years.
