Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said the dual-government deadlock in Venezuela needs to end as soon as possible, in a comment to Sputnik on Thursday

MONTEVIDEO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th February, 2019) Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said the dual-government deadlock in Venezuela needs to end as soon as possible, in a comment to Sputnik on Thursday.

"We think we have to solve this deadlock as soon as we can... An international contact group is based on this goal to create conditions so that an electoral process can begin ... in which anyone who wishes to run can do it," he said at a conference on Venezuela.

The South American country has been split since opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president on January 23.

The United States and several EU states backed the government transition, while Russia, China and others said they still recognized Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela's sole legitimate president.
