German Government Representative to Attend Montevideo Meeting on Venezuela - Diplomats

A representative of the German government will attend a meeting of an international contact group on Venezuela in Uruguay's capital of Montevideo on Thursday, German diplomats told Sputnik on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) A representative of the German government will attend a meeting of an international contact group on Venezuela in Uruguay's capital of Montevideo on Thursday, German diplomats told Sputnik on Tuesday.

'Germany will attend the first meeting of the contact group. As [Foreign] Minister Heiko Maas will be in Washington DC on Thursday, another representative of German government will participate in the meeting," the diplomats said.

According to the diplomats, the participants will "discuss a peaceful way forward towards free and fair presidential elections in Venezuela."

The European Union announced the establishment of the contact group in late January, in response to a political turmoil in Latin American country. The group will include representatives of the European Union, eight of its member states � France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom � as well as Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Uruguay.

On January 23, Juan Guaido, the head of the Venezuelan opposition-led National Assembly, proclaimed himself the country's interim president. A number of countries, including the United States, backed his leadership immediately. A number of European countries, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, recognized Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader on Monday. Russia, China, Mexico, and some other countries have backed incumbent Nicolas Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
