Watchdog Urges Qatar to Deliver on Promised Labor Reforms Before 2022 Word Cup

Qatar, which is scheduled to host FIFA World Cup in 2022, must boost its efforts to fulfill its promises to bring labor laws and their implementation in compliance with international standards before the event, a prominent human rights watchdog said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) Qatar, which is scheduled to host FIFA World Cup in 2022, must boost its efforts to fulfill its promises to bring labor laws and their implementation in compliance with international standards before the event, a prominent human rights watchdog said on Tuesday.

"Time is running out if the Qatari authorities want to deliver a legacy we can all cheer - namely a labour system that ends the abuse and misery inflicted upon so many migrant workers every day," Amnesty International's Deputy Director of Global Issues Stephen Cockburn said.

Doha has made some efforts with regard to labor rights protection but still has a way to go, he noted.

"Holes in the reforms to date mean many workers are still stuck in harsh conditions, vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, while those who return home do so empty handed, with no compensation and no justice," Cockburn said.

The Gulf monarchy was picked by FIFA in 2010 to host the world football championship in 2022. Qatar has been dogged with accusations of mishandling thousands of migrant workers it hired to build or renovate a dozen stadiums for the event.

In November 2017, Qatar signed an agreement with the UN International Labour Organization (ILO) to reform labor laws.
