MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) Russia will commission its Antarctic center for receiving information from Earth remote sensing satellites in March-April, Russian State Space Corporation Roscosmos said in a statement on Monday.

"Roscosmos has started the deployment of the Antarctic regional center (station) for receiving information in the area of Russian Antarctic station Progress. Commissioning of the station is scheduled for March-April 2019," Roscosmos said.

Back in April 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the country's plans to build an Earth remote sensing center in Antarctica.

The station's deployment is part of work on modernizing and further developing the country's integrated geographically distributed information system of Earth remote sensing, as well as expanding the capabilities of ground systems for receiving, processing, storing and distributing remote sensing data.
