Apparent Meteor Landing In Cuba Causes No Material Damage, Casualties - Reports

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd February, 2019) The apparent meteor, which hit western Cuba, has not caused any casualties or material damage, local media reported, citing local authorities.

The Prensa Latina news agency reported, citing Osmany Mosegui, the deputy chair of the administrative council of the Vinales municipality in the Pinar Del Rio province, that very loud sounds were heard in the neighborhood at around 01:00 p.m. (20:00 GMT) on Friday.

Specialists have reportedly found several purported parts of the meteorite at the crash site. The diameter of the largest fragment is up to 30 centimeters (11.8 inches).

On Friday, media reported that an explosion was heard in the sky over Pinal Del Rio, with eyewitnesses saying that they had seen fire and smoke.

The Cibercuba news portal said that several journalists on the scene reported that a military aircraft had exploded. However, the Russian embassy in Cuba dismissed these claims citing the Cuban authorities as saying that the blast heard in the sky over Cuba had likely been caused by the meteor.
