WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) US forces returning to Syria to take on a resurgent Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) will be far more costly than staying to finish the job now, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Elliot Engel said in a press release on Friday."I want to see American troops come home as soon as possible, but it will be far more costly to return to Syria to combat a resurgent [IS] than to ensure this dangerous enemy is defeated now," Engel said.
A recent Pentagon assessment, according to the release, has reportedly concluded that IS could regain territory in six to 12 months without sustained pressure.
Trump in a statement earlier in the day said the United States will soon have destroyed "100 percent" of the Islamic State's so-called caliphate and it was time to start bringing US troops home from Syria.
On Thursday, the US Senate rebuked Trump's plan to begin withdrawing US forces from Syria and Afghanistan with legislation, sponsored by Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, that opposes a precipitous pullout from either country.
