Russia to Push for Release of Nationals Illegally Held in Ukraine - Negotiator

The death of a Russian, captured fighting for rebels, in Ukraine's custody proves that Ukrainian detention is unsafe and Russia will do everything to free every single citizen, a Russian negotiator said

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) The death of a Russian, captured fighting for rebels, in Ukraine's custody proves that Ukrainian detention is unsafe and Russia will do everything to free every single citizen, a Russian negotiator said.

The Russian Investigative Committee opened a probe Friday into last year's death of Valery Ivanov in a penal colony near Lviv. Authorities in the breakaway Donetsk republic said he had fought on their side.

"Valery Ivanov's death was not accidental. The autopsy found he had been tortured to death. The lives of people detained in Ukraine are in danger. The Russian delegation in the [Minsk] Contact Group will do everything to bring back people who are held in Ukraine illegally," Boris Gryzlov told reporters.

He confirmed that the fighter was a Russian citizen residing in eastern Ukraine. Ivanov was on the list of prisoners of war who were to be exchanged for Ukrainian military personnel in December 2017. Gryzlov said Kiev flaunted the deal, while Donetsk and Luhansk delivered on their side of the swap agreement.
