Trump Renews Push to Pull US Forces Out of Syria, Afghanistan Amid Congress Pushback

US forces should begin coming home from Syria and Afghanistan because the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) is nearly destroyed and peace talks Afghan combatants are talking peace, President Donald Trump said in Twitter statements on Friday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) US forces should begin coming home from Syria and Afghanistan because the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) is nearly destroyed and peace talks Afghan combatants are talking peace, President Donald Trump said in Twitter statements on Friday.

"I inherited a total mess in Syria and Afghanistan, the "Endless Wars" of unlimited spending and death," Trump said. "It is now time to start coming home and, after many years, spending our money wisely."

Trump pointed out that 100 percent of the Islamic State's so-called caliphate will soon be completely destroyed.

The president's statement came one day after the Senate rebuked Trump's plan to begin withdrawing US forces from both nations, with lawmakers approving legislation sponsored by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opposing a pullout.

The 68-to-23 Senate vote to cut off debate all but guarantees that the measure will become part of a bipartisan Mideast policy bill to be taken up next week, according to lawmakers.

A December announcement by Trump that all US troops deployed in Syria would be coming home - and reports of plans to cut the US Afghan deployment in half - has prompted effort by Trump's inner circle and Republicans in Congress to delay any withdrawal.

Members of Congress and Trump's White House advisers have attempted to walk back a presidential announcement that some 2,000 US troops in Syria would come home within a month, claiming the Islamic State is not yet defeated.
