MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) Moscow believes that the presidential and parliamentary elections held in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are a milestone in the normalization of the situation in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday in a statement.

"Moscow views the elections as a milestone in the gradual normalization of the situation in this important African country, which has been experiencing internal political tension for several decades," the statement reads.

The ministry noted that the social and political situation in the DRC was discussed during the meeting of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and an adviser to the newly-elected DRC president.

The DRC citizens elected the country's president and members of the parliament on December 30. The DRC Constitutional Court confirmed the provisional results of the recently held presidential election and proclaimed opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi the republic's new president on Sunday.
