GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd January, 2019) Cybercriminals managed to steal almost 3 billion rubles (over $45 million) in Russia between July 2017 and July 2018, CEO of cybersecurity company Group-IB Ilya Sachkov told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"We usually analyze the period of 12 months in order to present data on hi-tech crimes as part of the annual CyberCrimeCon conference in July. Between 2017 [starting from July] and 2018, the total losses from financial crimes linked to attacks on Internet-banking, payment services and targeted attacks on banks amounted to 2.9 billion rubles in Russia. On average, one to two banks in Russia were targeted by cyberattacks each month. The average loss from one successful theft amounted to 132 million rubles," Sachkov said.

He pointed out that the number of these attacks was increasing because criminal groups were stepping up investments in new technologies, including those linked to cryptocurrencies.

According to Sachkov, the emergence of cryptocurrencies made it easier to transfer money between various countries and at the same time opened up new opportunities for cybercriminals.

The expert added that targeted attacks on banks remained the key type of financial cybercrime.
