ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Jan, 2019 ) :Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari Monday condemned the tragic incident of Sahiwal and said the history of police encounters was very old in Punjab.
Speaking in the National Assembly, she said the policemen involved in the incident would be given exemplary punishment. She said the incidents of police encounters in Punjab had been continuing for decades. In the past, nothing was done about the allegations of murders against police officer Rao Anwaar and others, she added.
Shireen Mazari said the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) would come up with its report about the Sahiwal incident in three days. She said the Opposition was misquoting the tweet of Prime Minister Imran Khan who not only talked about the activities of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) against terrorism but also added that the incident in Sahiwal was inexcusable.
She said the killing of parents in front of their children was unacceptable. The accused in the Model Town incident were still not given punishment, she recalled. She said the previous government destroyed the structure of police. Police had a colonial mindset and had no spirit of community policing, she noted.
She reiterated that torture and forced disappearances were not acceptable. It was responsibility of the police to protect citizens and police reforms would be aimed at making it a people friendly force.
