Democratic Senator of California Kamala Harris Announces 2020 Presidential Bid

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California announced on Monday that she will run for president in 2020 to "fight for American values," which she says are "all on the line now."

"I'm running for president. Let's do this together," she wrote on Twitter, attaching a special video address.

According to Harris, "truth, justice, decency, equality, freedom, democracy" � the values that all Americans cherish � are "all on the line now."

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values. That's why I am running for president of the United States. I'm running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together," she said in her video address.

Meanwhile, ABC news notes that if Harris, 54, gets nomination from the party and wins the election, she will be the first woman and woman of color to take the country's highest office.

Speaking on ABC's Good Morning America, Harris specifically stressed that she was honored to make her announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, referring to the civil rights leader as an inspiration.

According to the broadcaster, at least three politicians from the Democratic Party have already expressed their interest in running, including Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.
