RECAST - US State Secretary Pompeo May Run For Senate In 2020 - Reports

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st January, 2019) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo may nominate his candidacy for the US Senate in 2020, the Politico media outlet reported on Sunday, citing sources.

According to the publication, Pompeo is considering nomination to Kansas Senate seat, which will soon become vacant, as acting Sen. Pat Robertson announced that he would retire, once his term runs out.

Pompeo has not yet made any decision on this matter, but the Republicans in the Senate are actively persuading him to nominate his candidacy, the publication said.

Pompeo, a former Kansas congressman and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director, was approved as US Secretary of State in April. Unlike his predecessor Rex Tillerson, Pompeo does not conflict with Donald Trump and generally adheres to the president's foreign policy line. His departure may weaken the administration, which already suffers from staff turnover.

For example, in two years under Trump, the secretaries of defense, state, homeland security, health and veterans affairs, the prosecutor general, two White House chiefs of staff and three presidential national security advisers changed.

State secretaries usually change in the United States after the first term of the president, even if the head of state is re-elected for a second term. This is not a tradition or duty of the Secretary of State to retire, however, over the past 40 years, only two state secretaries, Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, have worked during the two presidential terms.
