DONETSK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th January, 2019) Two people have been injured in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) over the past week as a result of the Ukrainian army's shelling, a spokesperson for the DPR ombudsman's office said on Friday.

"From January 11 to January 17, two DPR soldiers were injured as a result of armed aggression by Ukraine on the territory of the DPR," the spokesperson said.

According to the ombudsman's office, 4,114 men, 615 women and 81 children have been killed in the DPR since the beginning of the Donbas conflict.

The military operation in eastern Ukraine was launched by Kiev in 2014 against militias in Donbas, after local residents of the region refused to recognize the new Ukrainian authorities.

In 2015, a ceasefire deal was signed between conflicting sides in Minsk following talks that were brokered by the leaders of the so-called Normandy group Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine. Despite the ceasefire agreement, sporadic fighting has continued in Donbas. To date, the situation remains tense, with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire. According to the United Nations, more than 10,000 people have died in the conflict.
