Russian Yenisei Super-Heavy Rocket's Stage Might Use Solid Fuel for 1st Time - Constructor

Solid-fueled accelerators with a high probability may be used in the new Russian super-heavy Yenisei carrier rocket, the Progress Rocket and Space Center (SRC Progress) head Dmitry Baranov said on Thursday

SAMARA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) Solid-fueled accelerators with a high probability may be used in the new Russian super-heavy Yenisei carrier rocket, the Progress Rocket and Space Center (SRC Progress) head Dmitry Baranov said on Thursday.

"RD-171 engines will be used [for the rocket] ... I think that the RD-180s will be used with a very high probability. And with a high probability, or I mean, perhaps, solid- fueled side rocket boosters will be used," Baranov told a press conference.

He added that several designs of Yenisei were being reviewed now, and conceptual design works were planned to be completed in 2019.

"In any case, the SRC Progress will be the main contractor for it, and we are now choosing between the variants," Baranov said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the creation of the super-heavy rocket in early 2018.

A source in the rocket and space industry has told Sputnik that the version of Yenisei's design had already been chosen, and would envisage the RD-180 engine and liquid fuel.
