Dozens of Business Leaders Urge May, Corbyn to Back 2nd Brexit Referendum

Dozens of business leaders on Thursday called on UK Prime Minister Theresa May and official opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to support another people's vote on Brexit after the government's withdrawal deal was defeated in the parliament

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) Dozens of business leaders on Thursday called on UK Prime Minister Theresa May and official opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to support another people's vote on Brexit after the government's withdrawal deal was defeated in the parliament.

"With the clock now ticking rapidly before we are due to quit, politicians must not waste any more time on fantasies. We urge the political leadership of both the main parties to support a People's Vote," the open letter published in The Times newspaper read.

The signatories included furniture designer Terence Conran and UK Chief Executive Officer of Thyssenkrupp engineering giant Terry Sargeant, among others.

May's Brexit deal was defeated in the UK House of Commons on Tuesday by 230 votes. However, May survived the no-confidence motion by Labour on Wednesday and is now expected to present a Plan B to the parliament on Monday.

The UK prime minister has stressed that she is open to negotiating with Labour, but Labour's leader Corbyn has refused to engage in talks until the government has ruled out a no-deal scenario.

May has already rejected calls for a second referendum. She has, similarly, said that the United Kingdom should not delay the exit.

The United Kingdom is expected to leave the European Union on March 29.
