Zimbabwean Doctors Report Over 170 Injured in Protests Against Fuel Price Hike

At least 172 people have been injured in Zimbabwe in the nationwide protests against the raise in the price of fuel which began in the country on Monday, the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) At least 172 people have been injured in Zimbabwe in the nationwide protests against the raise in the price of fuel which began in the country on Monday, the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, local media reported that at least three people, including a schoolboy, had been killed and 26 others had been injured during the protests.

"To date ZADHR network of Doctors across the country both in the public and private sector have attended to a total of 172 cases. 68 cases were gunshot wounds with the affected individuals sustaining severe injuries which required urgent surgery in most cases," the organization said in a press release published on the Zimeye news portal.

In addition, doctors reported a number of cases of police dog bites, injuries from clubs and sharp objects.

According to the ZADHR, the number of victims may be higher, since "many people were barricaded from communication and accessing treatment facilities."

Since Monday, Zimbabwe has been in a state of protest, sparked by a 150 percent increase in fuel prices that was introduced by the government over the weekend in a bid to tackle the economic crisis.
