Syrian Grand Mufti Proposes Holding Interreligious Summit in Russia

Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun proposed Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill on Wednesday to hold an interreligious summit in Russia involving representatives of all religious communities of Syria

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun proposed Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill on Wednesday to hold an interreligious summit in Russia involving representatives of all religious communities of Syria.

The Russian delegation is currently in Syria to sign a cooperation agreement between the cities of Sevastopol, located in Russia's Crimea, and Tartus.

"I came up with an offer to holy Patriarch Kirill to hold a religious summit in Moscow so that leadership of all religious groups - Muslim and Christian ones - will attend it. Let Hebrew and Buddhist [communities] also take part in it. It will be perfect if Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin delivers a speech there," the mufti said at a meeting with the Russian delegation.

He expressed an aspiration to hold the meeting under the motto "Religion is a matter of peace, not war and destruction."

"That would give an opportunity to separate the term 'faith' from the term 'armament.' It would be great if religious leaders, addressing this conference, said that their message is a message of peace," the mufti noted.

Hassoun noted that it was necessary to pay attention to the sources of funding of such religious conferences in order to prevent propaganda of hostile ideologies.

Russia, alongside Iran and Turkey, is a guarantor of the ceasefire in Syria. Last year, the Russian resort city of Sochi hosted the Syrian National Dialogue Congress that sought to find the ways to settle the long-lasting civil conflict in the country. Moscow has also been assisting Damascus both through supporting the struggle against terrorist groups operating in the country and providing humanitarian aid to civilians.
