MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) Increasing disagreements between the world's major powers represent the most urgent global challenge hindering collective action to tackle climate change, The Global Risks Report 2019, which was published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Wednesday, said.

"Geopolitical and geo-economic tensions are rising among the world's major powers. These tensions represent the most urgent global risks at present," the report reads.

Reconfiguration of the international relations, which strained over the last year, is fraught with potential risks, according to the report.

"Against this backdrop, it is likely to become more difficult to make collective progress on other global challenges from protecting the environment to responding to the ethical challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution," it says.

The threats posed by climate change became more pronounced a year ago after US President Donald Trump announced that the United States, one of the countries producing the largest amount of carbon emissions in the world, would be withdrawing from the Paris Agreement on climate change, which regulates the world's efforts to combat global warming. Washington formally notified the United Nations of its intention on August 4, 2017. However, the country cannot officially exit the accord until November 4, 2020.

The WEF will be held on January 22-25 in Davos, Switzerland.
