At Least 36 Bus Passengers Kidnapped in Cameroon's South-West - Reports

A group of gunmen have kidnapped at least 36 people in southwestern Cameroon and their whereabouts are still unknown, local media reported on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) A group of gunmen have kidnapped at least 36 people in southwestern Cameroon and their whereabouts are still unknown, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to Journal du Cameroun, gunmen stopped two passenger buses heading from the city of Kumba to Buea on Tuesday. The gunmen ordered the passengers to step out of the vehicles and show their identification documents. They were then taken to the nearby bushes, while the bus drivers were forced to return to Kumba.

The Cameroonian authorities have started an investigation, but the whereabouts of the passengers are still unknown.

The Kumba-Buea highway has been an area where frequent clashes between the country's authorities and armed men occur, making it unsafe route for passenger travel.

The criminal situation in Cameroon, including its capital, has recently deteriorated, in particular, due to an influx of refugees from different regions of the country. There has been an increase in banditry and robbery cases recorded in areas previously considered prosperous, including in the vicinity of government agencies and foreign diplomatic missions.
