Paris Condemns Iran's Satellite Launch Attempt as Violating UN Security Council Resolution

The French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned Iran's attempt to place a satellite into orbit, stressing that such actions do not comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2231

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) The French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned Iran's attempt to place a satellite into orbit, stressing that such actions do not comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

On Tuesday, Iranian Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said that Iran had carried out the first of the two planned launches of its satellites with domestically made rockets, but the Payam satellite failed to reach the orbit as the launch missile did not pick up enough speed in the final stage of the flight.

"Iran said that it had carried out a launch of a carrier rocket. France resolutely condemns this launch that does not comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2231," the ministry' s spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson added that France and the global community were concerned over Iranian ballistic program.

"We call on Iran not to carry out new launches of ballistic missiles able to carry nuclear weapon, including launch missiles. We also call on Iran to fulfill its obligations within all the related UN Security Council Resolutions," the statement read on.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231 endorsed the Iranian nuclear deal back in 2015.

Iran insists that launches do not violate the UN Security Council resolutions. It plans a new satellite launch in coming days as part of what the nation claims is a space exploration program.
