The residential and administrative infrastructure that needed to be built before construction of reactors at the site of Egypt's future Dabaa nuclear power plant (NPP) could start has been completed, Ayman Hamzah, a spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, told Sputnik on Wednesday

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) The residential and administrative infrastructure that needed to be built before construction of reactors at the site of Egypt's future Dabaa nuclear power plant (NPP) could start has been completed, Ayman Hamzah, a spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"The administrative campus necessary to begin work on the project's infrastructure, in particular, a residential complex, administrative buildings for experts and workers, has been completed ... The external fence has been completed, the fence for the construction of reactors has been completed," Hamzah said.

He stressed that Egyptian companies were involved in building the infrastructure.

"The construction [of reactors] is expected to begin between 2020 and 2021 after we obtain the necessary licenses. We received a report on nuclear safety from [Russian nuclear agency] Rosatom. Exploration and engineering work is being carried out based on [the report] and needs to be finished in order to obtain the licenses," the spokesman explained.

In December 2017, Russia and Egypt signed regulations to bring into force the commercial contract for the Dabaa NPP's construction. The total contract value amounted to about $60 billion, an all-time record for the global nuclear industry. The NPP will have four Russian-developed VVER-1200 nuclear reactors, each of which with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts. The first power unit of the NPP is expected to be put into operation in 2026.
