May Stresses Need To Test Parliament's Confidence In Gov't As Brexit Deal Fails In Commons

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th January, 2019) UK Prime Minister Theresa May said after her Brexit deal failed in parliament earlier on Tuesday that there was a need to confirm whether her government still enjoyed the confidence of the House of Commons, adding that such a motion may be debated on Wednesday if tabled.

"First, we need to confirm whether this Government still enjoys the confidence of the House. I believe that it does, but given the scale and importance of tonight's vote it is right that others have the chance to test that question if they wish to do so. I can therefore confirm that if the official opposition table a confidence motion this evening in the form required by the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, the Government will make time to debate that motion tomorrow," May said in Commons.

She added that the government would "make a statement about the way forward and table an amendable motion by Monday."
