First Aid Shipment in 6 Months Reaches 2 Hard to Reach Areas in Yemen - UN

Aid shipments for thousands of Yemeni families have arrived in hard to reach communities south of the Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah for the first time in six months, the UN World Food Program announced in a press release on Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th January, 2019) Aid shipments for thousands of Yemeni families have arrived in hard to reach communities south of the Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah for the first time in six months, the UN World Food Program announced in a press release on Tuesday.

"For the first time since the increase in fighting in Hudaydah in June 2018 WFP managed to assist hard-to-reach areas of Tuhayat and Darahimi," UN spokesman Herve Verhoosel said in the release. "This can be thanks to an inconsistent de-escalation over recent days following the December peace talks in Stockholm, Sweden."

The World Food Program explained that the shipments included more than 3,334 metric tons of food assistance to the two areas that was shipped simultaneously from Al Hudaydah and Aden.

Millions of Yemenis face either food insecurity or the threat of famine as a result of a conflict pitting a Saudi-led air coalition and government ground forces against Houthi rebels, according to the United Nations.

Houthis control most of western Yemen, including the capital of Sanaa.
