UK's Liberal Democrats to Support Possible No-Confidence Vote in May's Government - Leader

The UK Liberal Democrats will support a possible no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May's government if the motion is proposed by the opposition Labour Party, Liberal Democrats leader Vince Cable said on Tuesday, the day the UK parliament is voting on the draft Brexit deal

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th January, 2019) The UK Liberal Democrats will support a possible no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Theresa May's government if the motion is proposed by the opposition Labour Party, Liberal Democrats leader Vince Cable said on Tuesday, the day the UK parliament is voting on the draft Brexit deal.

The future of the Brexit deal is the subject of much speculation, with many suggesting that it is not likely to be endorsed by the parliament. On Monday, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, in particular, predicted that May would likely face a defeat in the country's legislature, adding that a no-confidence motion was "coming soon."

"Mr. Corbyn is going to go for a no-confidence vote. We will support no-confidence. Maybe there will be a general election, probably not," Cable told the Sky news broadcaster.

According to Cable, the motion is likely to be brought not on the day of the vote but on Monday, when May is set to present alternative Brexit proposals in the event the existing deal fails to pass.

In November, London and Brussels finally completed a draft agreement on Brexit after more than a year of negotiations. However, the future of the Brexit agreement, which is yet to be voted on, is still unclear. Members of the UK parliament have expressed concerns over the document's provisions, specifically the backstop solution for the Irish border.
