SC orders govt to compensate losses made during protests against Asia Bibi verdict

The court ordered to submit an implementation report in the court after making complete compensations.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 12th January, 2018) The Supreme Court has ordered the Federal and provincial governments to compensate the losses of the people affected during protests against Asia Bibi verdict.

A two-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar held the hearing of a suo motu notice in the Lahore Registry on Saturday.

The Punjab advocate general and other parties concerned appeared before the court.

The Punjab advocate general told the court that losses during the protest amount to around Rs 262 million.

The CJP remarked, “Reports have been issued but when will the losses be compensated to the people?”

The CJP said that 2.5 months have passed but the complete compensation plan has not been prepared as yet.

“This plan would also not have been made had the court not ordered,” he added.

Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan remarked, “Is there a plan for payments or is it just written action.”

The Interior Department section officer said that payments would be made this month.

The court ordered to submit an implementation report in the court after making complete compensations.

The apex court had in October, 2018 acquitted Asia, a Christian woman condemned to death onblasphemy charges, accepting her appeal against sentence.

The court decision had errupted protests across the country by some religious factions.

On December 1, the top leadership of TLP was booked under sedition and terrorism charges for inciting violence, arson and damage to public and private property during their protest in the first week of November.

A case of sedition and terrorism was registered against TLP leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi at Civil Line Police Station Lahore while Pir Afzal Qadri was booked in Gujrat. Similarly, cases were lodged against Iniyatullah Haq and Hafiz Farooqul Hassan at the Rawat Police Station.

The miscreants had damaged public property worth Rs 50 million, besides misbehaving with common citizens during the TLP protest. They had even harassed women, besides snatching their purses. Such miscreants were being identified and booked under Anti-Terrorism Act.
