Griffiths Says Next Round Of Yemen Talks May Be Held In February, No Exact Date Set Yet

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th January, 2019) The next round of the UN-led intra-Yemeni consultations could be held next month, but no exact date and location for the talks have been set yet, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths, who is on a visit to Moscow, told Sputnik on Friday.

The Office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) said on December 11 that a new round of the Yemen consultations was planned at the beginning of 2019.

"We are working on it ... We don't have a date nor do we have yet a place. We have some options which I will keep to myself. I hope to have these talks soon. And I think I have said that I hope that obviously happens in February because we don't want to delay too much," Griffiths said.

The previous UN-led consultations on the Yemeni peace that was held in Sweden last month resulted in an agreement on various humanitarian measures, including a proposal for the exchange of prisoners, a ceasefire in the Yemeni port city of Al Hudaydah, and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in the area.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebels for several years. The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.
