Former UK Defense, Mi6 Chiefs Warn That May's Brexit Deal Threatens National Security

Former head of UK Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) Richard Dearlove and ex-Chief of the UK General Staff Charles Guthrie have warned the Conservative party that the current Brexit agreement might threaten the UK national security

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) Former head of UK Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) Richard Dearlove and ex-Chief of the UK General Staff Charles Guthrie have warned the Conservative party that the current Brexit agreement might threaten the UK national security.

"The Withdrawal Agreement ... would place control of aspects of our national security in foreign hands... Please ensure that your MP does not vote for this bad agreement," the former officials wrote in a letter, published by Conservative Party lawmaker Owen Paterson on his Twitter on Thursday.

According to Dearlove and Guthrie, UK Prime Minister Theresa May's deal would also hamper the UK relations with NATO, the United States as well as with the Commonwealth of Nations, the letter added.

In November, May, when submitting the documents on the divorce from Brussels for a final approval to the UK Parliament, said that the Brexit deal would secure "a broadest security partnership" in the EU history. The Brexit deal includes data exchanges between the sides on passengers' name records, fingerprints, wanted and missing persons, among cooperation on other issues, according to the prime minister.

The future of the Brexit agreement is still unclear, and the no-deal scenario remains possible. The members of the UK Parliament are set to vote on the deal next week.
