Russia To Promote Creation Of Diamond Identification Marking System - Finance Ministry

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th January, 2019) During its chairmanship of the Kimberley Process, an organization aiming to diminish the flow of conflict diamonds in the world market, Russia will promote the establishment of an international diamond identification marking system, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseev told Sputnik in an interview.

Russia is set to chair the Kimberley Process in 2020.

"An important issue for us is, of course, the traceability of diamonds," Moiseev said when asked about Russia's initiatives intended to be implemented during the country's chairmanship.

He noted that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was used to confirm the authenticity of diamonds in the world to avoid the appearance of blood diamonds on international markets.

"But now, in fact, there is no direct link between the diamond and the certificate. They, of course, are attached to each other, but there is no international exchange of data on the gemstones, and databases do not exist. Then we want to go to the technology that we have already shown many times, i.e. directly marking large gemstones," Moiseev stressed.

He added that the planned international diamond identification marking system was needed to fight illegal injections of synthetic gemstones in the market of natural ones.
